The Naga People’s Front (NPF) swept the polls in Nagaland which was held in February, managing to secure the people’s mandate for a third successive term and winning 37 of the 59 seats, and recorded a very high polling of over 83 per cent. The results came as a big blow to the main opposition party in the State, the Congress, which secured eight seats despite a high-pitched campaign that had been kicked-off by party president Sonia Gandhi and included other star campaigners — party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. What made NPF so popular in Nagaland? What was the magic behind these third successive term?
Are they the ideal party? No way, nor do they claim to be. Fighting all forms of corruption at all levels of government. This is enshrined in the constitution of NPF under Aims & Objective (d) (4th Amendment, 2002). They themselves need a house clean. Nagaland’s Growth Rate of 2012 brings shame to the people of Nagaland.
The Neiphiu Rio factor: Recently, some new media has credited Rio that he played the role of catalyst in smooth progress of the peace dialogue between the Government of India and the NSCN-IM and at the same time it encouraged civil society organizations like the Naga Hoho and the Church to play a key role in brokering peace between the fighting factions of NSCN so that the peace progress continued to progress till is logical end and the lives of common people in Nagaland is not jeopardized. Neiphiu Rio-led NPF government has been able to facilitate a peaceful atmosphere in the State which used to be a hot bed of rebellion and where the smell of gun power was omnipresent in the air because of frequent showdown between the rebels and the security forces.
Does these validate that the people of Nagaland put their heart, mind and trust on Neiphiu Rio? No, no way. He is not even an ideal leader but only a good politician with a decisive planning.
Corruption & Development: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee was very right by alleging that DAN government had no time for economic growth of the state while being “over-engaged” in Naga political issue which was not its priority. While the negative GDP growth rate showed that the state’s economy was in recession, NPCC said the rich in the state were spending larger part of their “cash flow” outside the state and on fixed immovable assets within the state.
The incident of Imkong L. Imchen, who had to resign from the Council of Ministers after seven unlicensed arms and cash worth Rs. 1.1 crore was recovered from his vehicle just days before the polls, won with a margin of well over 5,000 votes at Koridang in Mokokchung over the independent candidate, T. Chaluumba Ao. This prove that politician and public drinks from the same cup. We must not expect development and corruption free state from such vista.
Now let us come to the first question. Why the people of Nagaland voted for NPF? In my humble opinion they are little bit better than their rivals.
