Some biblical scholar are of the opinion that the "NEW" heavens and Earth in Revelation 21:1 is a brand new creation of heavens and Earth. They strongly based their interpretation in the literal sense. First, let me clear my parameter here, I am not going to tell what exactly it will be in the future. But allow me to put up my argument on the literal interpretation of this verse. Let us take a closer look on the word "NEW" in the original Greek language.
The Greek word "kainos" is used here. 2537 (Strong's) kainĂ³s – properly, new in quality (innovation), fresh in development or opportunity – because "not found exactly like this before."
Now let us look into 2 corinthians 5: 17, where it use the same word "Kainos" to give the idea that anyone who is Christ is a new creation.
2 Corinthians 5:17: wste ei tiV en cristw kainh ktisiV ta arcaia parhlqen idou gegonen aina ta panta
Now listen to this, did we receive a brand new body when Christ came to live in us? I think absolutely NO. So why should we conclude that Revelation 21:1's New Heavens and a New Earth will be a new creation?
If God has created the earth to last 'forever' we might need to abandon our 'disposable earth' theology and have a rethink about how Christians can be stewards not just exploiters of our environment. That's why our interpretation of this prophetic passage has such dire consequences if we get it wrong.
